Synopsis



Women in Victorian London fall prey to an unknown menace, while monstrous terror lurk in the sewers under the city. Chinese gangs scurry in the dark fog, and a sinister stage magician seeks to serve his mysterious master. The Doctor and Leela arrive, only to find themselves plunged into a series of macabre horrors ...

To mark the end of Philip Hincliffe's tenure as producer, script editor Robert Holmes comes up with a period masterpiece of a story set in the mysterious misty backstreets of Victorian London. Combining influences from Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu films with the more gothic horrors of The Phantom of the Opera and the real-life crimes of Jack the ERipper, Holmes weaves a tale that is both startlingly efficient and complex in structure. Tom Baker's Doctor is perhaps at the peak of his powers, whether stalking giant rats through the sewers of London, trying to outwit his mysterious opponent and predict his next move, or simply observing events from beneath the brim of a deerstalker cap.
