Synopsis

The Doctor is on trial for his life. Plucked out of time and space by the Time Lords, he is charged with transgressing the First Law of Time. He must defend himself against the prosecution led by the sinister Valeyard ...

The trial begins as the Time Lords review an adventure from the Doctor's recent past. The setting is Ravolox, where the Doctor and Peri find themselves caught in the conflict between a warrior tribe, a pair of intergalactic con-men, and a god-like robot.

But deep below the surface of the mysterious planet lie secrets that threaten the very fabric of the universe. And to protect them, drastic measures have been taken that will shock the Doctor to his very core ...

Background

After 18 months off-air, Doctor Who was back in September 1986 - and the programme was on trial for his life.

BBC Management had suspended the show, expressing concerns about declining ratings and its dark and violent tone. For the twenty-third season, the Doctor Who production team decided to make major changes. Humour replaced horror. A breathtaking opening sequence promised an upgrade of the show's visual effects. Most importantly, the shorter, fourteen-episode season was conceived as a single story arc. The Doctor would face trial for interference with the course of history. Appropriately for a Time Lord, the evidence would be draawn from the past, present and future.

In the midst of innovation, the programme looked at past strengths. Robert Holmes, one of the programme's most popular writers and script editors, was asked to pen the beginning and end of the saga. Despite failing health, Holmes took up the challenge. These four episodes represent, sadly, his last completed story for the programme.

As the opening bars of Dominic Glynn's eerie new arrangement of the theme tune started up, anxious fans had only one question. Would the Doctor - and the programme - survive the Trial Of A Time Lord ... ?
