Synopsis

The Doctor is on trial for his life. Plucked out of time and space by the Time Lords, he is charged with transgressing the First Law of Time. He must defend himself against the prosecution led by the sinister Valeyard ...

In a desperate bid to clear his name, the Doctor presents his defence to the charges laid against him. In the year 2986, the starliner Hyperion III makes its way to Earth ... but all is not well. The Doctor and Mel arrive in response to a distress call, although not in time to prevent a murder.

And this will not be the only death: someone aboard will kill again and again to protect their secret. And while the murderer closes in above decks, in the Hydroponic Centre a terrifying new breed of creature is about to awaken ...

Background

The third story embedded in The Trail of a Time Lord was the last to be filmed for Season 23, and so from the actor's viewpoint this is effectively Colin Baker's swansong. Many scripts were considered and rejected for a variety of reasons, before producer John Nathan-Turner commissioned this story from Pip and Jane Baker.

After the experimental nature of the proceeding two instalments, Parts Nine to Twelve mark a return to 'traditional' Doctor Who. The claustrophobic nature of small cabins and ventilation shafts brings to mind the 'Base under Siege' stories of the Patrick Troughton and early Tom Baker eras. And while a new race of monsters wreaks havoc, the Doctor must play both detective and action hero as he simultaneously battles the Veriods while deducing the identity of a murderer at large.

This is also Bonnie Langford's debut story, and in Mel we see the return of a plucky companion who willingly accompanies the Doctor, seeking out danger and excitement. The brave move of eschewing an 'origin' story for Mel and plunging straight into the story means that the focus remains firmly on the plot.

The cliffhangers for this story are particularly thrilling, and in the case of the first episode this is especially true, with Langford's scream deliberately pitched to blend into the theme sting.

With so many traditional elements present, it is perhaps apt that this fast-paced, crowd-pleasing story was the last that Colin Baker filmed, It is a fitting tribute to his time in Doctor Who.
