The action takes place in the 16th century and concerns Solano, a Spanish nobleman and his quest for the Fountain of Eternal Youth and Life. After a shipwreck and a journey deep into the forest, he finally finds the Magic Fountain with the help of the Indian Princess, Watawa. But she knows that to those not prepared in Wisdom and Truth, its waters bring death. At first she wishes that Solano will die, as she hates all white men for killing her race, but she falls in love with him and eventually drinks the waters of the Magic Fountain herself in order to save his life. But Solano, who truly loves her, also drinks from the Fountain, so that he might follow her in death.

Delius's second Opera, completed in 1895, contains some of his most tuneful music, including passages from the earlier 'Florida Suite'. It also has many dramatic moments (which have been heightened by south effects) such as the Storm and Shipwreck, the Indian War Dance, the evocation and apparition odf the Magic Fountain, and the death of the two lovers.
