After signing a treaty with enemy aliens, he returns to his home planet, Gallifrey, and demands the Presidency of the High Council of Time Lords. His first act of rule is to banish Leela to the wastelands on pain of death. His second is to sabotage the planet's defence barriers, enabling full scale invasion. Why has the Doctor joined forces with the militaristic Vardans? Is he out for revenge against the Time Lords? Or does he have a hidden agenda? But his allies are also hiding a dark secret, for behind them is a familar enemy waiting for the right moment to attack ... BackgroundThe Invasion of Time marked the end of the Graham Williams' first series as producer. The fifteenth season had presented viewers with a markedly different style, aschewing the Gothic attributes of the previous few years with an artistic, playful intellectualism. A sequel to Robert Holmes' classic The Deadly Assassin, this story differed considerably in its portrayal of Gallifreyan lore. Originally the season's epic closer had been author David Weir's The Killer Cats of Geng Singh, until it was decreed too expensive to produce (required a stadium full of cat people). Williams and Script Editor, Anthony Read hurriedly wrote a substitute under the BBC pseudonym, David Agnew. The Invasion of Time boasts a number of surprises. Chief among them was the reappearance of the Sontarans, who had proved popular despite only having featured in two prior stories, The Time Warrior (BBCDVD 2334) and The Sontaran Experiment (BBCDVD 1811). But it was the departure of the Doctor's companions - the savage Leela, masterfully played by Louise Jameson, and K-9 Mk1 - that proved most shocking. Leela's sudden attachment to Commander Andred left viewers mystified. Jameson herself had wanted a heroic death saving the Doctor. It was also decided that K-9, that most faithful and iconic of the Doctor's companions, should leave to accompany Leela, after the radio-controlled prop had proven difficult to work with. But the popularity of the character was so great that there was already a more mobile, improved Mk2 version which the Doctor had prepared earlier, proving that a Time Lord's best friend is his robot dog. | ||
