And when the menacing Black Guardian asks him to kill the Doctor in return for a trip home, the boy quickly agrees. By coincidence, Turlough's maths teacher is an old friend of the Time Lord's. But why doesn't the Brigadier remember that? The Doctor, along with his friends Tegan and Nyssa, is about to find out ... BackgroundTo celebrate the 20th anniversary of Doctor Who, producer John Nathan-Turner wanted something from the past to appear in each of the stories to feature the returning Black Guardian. Although the Black Guardian hadn't been seen much in the series, he was mentioned throughout The Key to Time season (1978-79) until he eventually turned up at the end of The Armageddon Factor. He is played by Valentine Dyall, who gives a suitably menacing performance. Originally, Ian Chesterton, the teacher who travelled in the TARDIS at the start of the series in 1963, was to have been in the story. But when William Russell couldn't reprise the role due to other work commitments, Nicholas Courtney's Brigadier returned instead. The school setting remained in the script, though, and the retired Brigadier now taught mathematics. Actor Mark Strickson makes an impressive debut as new companion Turlough in this story. Scared, selfish and vulnerable, viewers are never quite sure whose side he's on for several episodes - and for the first time there seems to someone dangerous aboard the TARDIS. Finally, setting Mawdryn Undead in 1977 and 1983 has thrown a great deal of confusion over the Doctor's time at UNIT - but who said time travel was straightforward? This lead to a line from the Doctor in 2008's The Sontaran Stratagem - and apparently he can never remember when he was there either, so maybe viewers shouldn't worry about it too much either, and just enjoy the fast-paced, colourful and complex story instead. | ||
