The lush vegetation of the planet's surface hides a ragtag group of bandits, a giant eggshell, man-eating Wolfweeds and, within the depths of an old mining pit, something very large has a terrible secret which threatens the destruction of Chloris itself ... BackgroundThe Creature From The Pit is the apotheosis of the Graham Williams / Douglas Adams era of Doctor Who, with sumptuous production values and humour throughout. Recorded first in the season it marks the performing debuts of Lalla Ward as Romana and David Brierley as the voice of K9. It also marks the last time that Doctor Who stalwart, Christopher Barry, would direct. Other notable cast members include one time Troughton years director, Morris Barry in the cameo role of Tollund, and the wonderfully mercurial Geoffrey Bayldon as Organon. Perhaps best known for his portrayal of The Crowman in Worzel Gummidge, Bayldon was touted by many as the perfect candidate to replace Tom Baker. He would eventually play the role of the Doctor in Big Finish's Unbound audio series. The production was plagued with problems over the special effects, particularly in the realisation of the creature. Mat Irvine would have preferred to use model work while the director rather unfortunately decided on a full size prop. Given the limitations of the budget at the time its no surprise that we end up with one of the least convincing monsters in the series history. However, we do have perhaps the most convincing jungle sets, filmed at Ealing studios, to compensate. This coupled with the atmospheric cave sets, the excellent costume design and a story that mirrors British politics at the time, combine to give Chloris a truly alien feel. Love it or loathe it, The Creature From The Pit is very much a product of its time. Whether you howl with laughter or sneer derisorily at the infamour 'Teach yourself Tibetan' scene, you can't ignore the significant impact that the Williams / Adams team left on the series history. | ||
