Joined by Ace, a teenage waitress with a love for explosives, the group venture off to uncover lost riches, not knowing that Kane, Iceworld's ruthlessly intimidating overlord, will gladly murder them all to gain possession of the Dragonfire himself. Before long the Doctor finds himself playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with Kane's mercenaries, descending through the ice caverns ever closer to the deadly gaze of the monstrous dragon that lurks below ... BackgroundThe stories transmitted in Series 24 have an individual flavour in stark contrast to the run of stories transmitted both before and after 1987. Following the doom-laden events of The Trial of a Time Lord and very public difficulties behind the scenes, Doctor Who had rebranded itself as more light-hearted, surreal and comedic than it had been for some time. At the very tail end of the series, however, Dragonfire heralds the new future of the programme and promises some interesting motifs. Ian Briggs famously crafted his story to be played as a comedy, yet more serious undertones are also evident. For the first time, the Doctor and Mel arrive in order to investigate something troubling the Time Lord, as opposed to blithely wandering into a new environment without any ulterior motive. Ace, the new friend introduced to the Doctor during Dragonfire, at first seems increasingly capable, but significant chinks in her armour are hinted at along with indications of a more complex background than had previously been present in the Doctor's travelling companions. As the story's true threat becomes apparent, the viewer watches this new Doctor furiously deducing a means of escape. Within this story in particular, central archetypes are 'recast' with a more driven and, perhaps, manipulative Doctor and a sidekick who hides her fear behind aggression and bravado. Dragonfire was voted the series's clear favourite in the annual fan-poll run by Doctor Who Magazine and this final story shows the new way forward for Doctor Who. It would appear the programme's rebranding had succeeded, and the very best elements of Dragonfire would appear in many other stories over the next two years ... | ||
