| According to the Oxford English Dictionary 'Crackerjack' means ''Something that is exceptional or splended''. The television series, which was produced on the 15th September 1955 by Johnny Downews for a series of six programmes, has run for almost 20 years, over 400 transmissions. It certainly lives up to this definition. Nearly every great name in the world of show business and pop entertainment has appeared in the show at some time. First presented by Eamonn Andrews with Jack Douglas and Joe Baker co-starring, other regulars have been Ronnie Corbett, Leslie Crowther, Rod McLennan, Michael Aspel, and Little and Large. The guests have included Harry Secombe, Frankie Howerd, Ted Ray, Norman Wisdom, Max Bygraves, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Vera Lynn, Adam Faith, Petula Clark, Gerry Glitter, Slade and the Sweet. The programme has an average estimated audience of 8 million viewers weekly. Her Majesty The Queen attended a special performance on the occasion of the BBC's 25th Television Anniversary. Two years ago I was asked to take over the production, following in the footsteps of Peter Whitmore and Brian Jones, both of whom have had long associations with the series. It was at this time that I asked Peter Glaze, who has appeared as a regular in more programmes than anyone else, to rejoin the cast after an absence of two years and the star with those great performers Don Maclean and Jacqueline Clarke. When I was asked to make an LP of favourite Crackerjack songs and sketches, I thought it was a great idea. My thanks to the sound crew of the Radio Studio Managers, who through their technical wizardry brought the disc to life. I hope you enjoy it and I am extremely proud to be associated with it.
