JOHN BUNYON
John Bunyan (1628-88), born at Elstow, near Bedford, the son of a tinsmith or travelling tinker, learned reading and writing at the village school, and was prepared to follow his father's trade. But in 1644, he was swept up with the Civil War and spent some years with the Parliamentary forces, mainly on garrison duty, before his discharge. About 1648, after a religious crisis which lasted for several years, he was 'converted', and, attaching himself to a Noncomformist group in Bedford, he began to preach. In 1660, a few months after Charles II's Restoration, he was arrested for preaching without a licence; and, on his refusal to give an undertaking not to continue preaching, he was imprisoned, and remained in prison, off and on, for the next twelve years. Out of this experience grew his spiritual autobiography, 'Grace Abounding', and, later, 'The Pilgrim's Progress', the First Part of which was published in 1678. The Second Part first appeared in 1684, and since then both parts have been published together. Bunyan's other principal works are 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman' (1680), and 'The Holy War' (1682).

'The Pilgrim's Progress', an allegory, takes the form of a dream by the author, in which he sees Christian, with a burden on his back, reading in a book, from which he learns of the impending doom of the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Part 2 tells how Christian's wife, Christiana, sets out with her children on the same pilgrimage.

DAVID DAVIS
David Davis, born at Malvern, Worcestershire, and educated at Bishop's Stortford College and The Queen's College, Oxford, began his career as a schoolmaster, but after three years he joined the BBC as an assistant in The Children's Hour, with which he was associated till its demise in 1964. During World War II, he served at sea with the Royal Navy, as seaman in minesweepers, and later as Lieienant RNVR. In 1951, he was appointed Assistant Head, and in 1953, Head of Children's Hour. In 1964 he transferred to the Drama department as a producer.

Married, with three children, and two cats, 'David' has been well-known to radio-listeners for over thirty years, both as a reader of stories and poetry, and as a musician. (He qualified as LRAM/ARCM, after taking his degree.) He broadcast for the BBC from Odense and Copenhagen on the occasion of the Hans Christian Andersen centenary. More recently, he has been heard in 'Story time' (Radio 4), and as a reader in the religious programmes 'Ten to Eight' and 'Five to Ten', from which many of the extracts on this record have been taken. He was awarded the M. B. E. in the New Years Honours, 1969.

Note on the church bells
Bells from various churches throughout the country are heard between each band. At the beginning and end of the record are the bells of the church at Ilstow where John Bunyan was one of the bell-ringers.
