This record of pronunciation practice is primarily intended as an accompaniment to the BBC radio course 'Intorduction to Arabic' although it should be of assistance to anyone studying the language for the purpose of speaking it.
It refers only to educated spoken Arabic found in Jordan, Syria and the Lebanon and, to a lesser degree, Egypt. It does not attempt to deal with facts of the language outside this 'middle' region. For the same reason, the leaflet accompanying the record restricts the information given to pronunciation prevailing in these areas.
The first side of the record concentrates on the sounds of Arabic and you should read the instructions before you start working with it. Side 2 gives practice in word-linking and continuous speech. |
Further information |
BBC sub label for foreign language records.
This was the first BBC label available to the public to purchase starting in the early 1960's. To start with, you could only purchase these direct from the BBC. There were shows aired where listeners could follow the programme on the Radio (usually foreign language training shows) and then purchase the record and separate book to accompany it. These could be kept afterwards to continue their home learning.
Later the shows were also recorded for television and the records as well as the books became more widely available in the shops. |
