The Stranglers is een Engelse rockband die ontstaan is via de punkrockscene. De huidige leden zijn Jean-Jacques Burnel, Baz Warne, Jim Macaulay en Toby Hounsham. Oudleden waren dat Pikzwart, Hugh Cornwell, Hans Warmling, Dave Greenfield, John Ellis en Paul Roberts.
Met tot nu toe zo'n 23 Britse top 40 singles en 17 Britse top 40 albums gescoord in een carrière van vier decennia, zijn de Stranglers een van de langst bestaande en meest "continu succesvolle" bands die ooit zijn ontstaan in de Britse punkscene. Opgericht als de Guildford Stranglers op 11 september 1974 in Guildford, Surrey, bouwden ze oorspronkelijk een aanhang op in de pubrockscene van het midden van de jaren zeventig. Terwijl hun agressieve, compromisloze houding hen identificeerde als een van de aanstichters van de Britse punkrockscene die volgde, volgde hun eigenzinnige aanpak zelden een enkel muzikaal genre en de groep ging verder met het verkennen van een verscheidenheid aan muziekstijlen, van new wave tot artrock en gothic rock tot de sofisti-pop van een deel van hun jaren 80-productie. Ze hadden groot mainstream succes met hun single "Golden Brown" uit 1982. Hun andere hits zijn onder meer "No More Heroes", "Peaches", "Always the Sun" en "Skin Deep" en de Top 40-hit "Big Thing Coming" uit 2003, die werd gezien als een terugkeer naar vorm. |
