But the keeper is dying ... Summoned by the ailing Keeper, the Doctor and Adric discover that all is not well on Tracken. An evil presence threatens the future of the planet. An evil that knows all about the Doctor ... BackgroundThe Master: from today's perspective, he seems as much a part of Doctor Who's DNA as the Daleks, the TARDIS and the Cybermen. It's easy to forget what a late addition to the mix the Master was. Created by producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks as a 'Moriarty' figure to pit against Jon Pertwee's dashing Third Doctor, the character debuted in Robert Holmes' story Terror of the Autons, which opened the programme's eight season in 1971. Eighth season! That's how late the Master was to this party! Letts and Dicks let the character take too firm a grip on the proceedings that year, as the Master turned up as the main baddie in every story that season. Realising that for the character to work, he had to be used more sparingly, the production team reduced the Master's involvement. He would return to the series for just three more outings in the next two years. But even that wasn't enough to freshen up a character that everyone concerned thought was running out of steam, and plans were made to write the Master out of the series in a permanent fashion. Tragically, the actor playing the role, Roger Delgado, died in a car crash in Turkey in 1973, before plans could be taken any further, and the Master just disappeared from Doctor Who ... Writer Robert Holmes resurrected the Master for his 1976 story The Deadly Assassin, portraying him as a decaying, emaciated corpse, hell-bent on extending his life beyond its natural - and imminent - end. The story ended with the Master escaping, perhaps with enough power to regenerate further ... It was now up to future production teams if they wanted to revive him. In 1980, producer John-Nathan Turner decided to do just that. Concerned that the departure of Tom Baker from the role might alienate a section of the audience, he contrived to have as many familiar icons from the series around to bridge the impending regeneration. He attempted to lure former companions Elisabeth Sladen [Sarah Jane Smith] and Louise Jameson [Leela] to return to the series to help reassure the audience, and when these approaches failed, elected instead to help in audience identification. He also decided that the re-introduction of the Master would help. And so Anthony Ainley was awarded the role. Made-up to look not entirely dissimiliar from his predecessor, Roger Delgado, Ainley made the role uniquely his over the next decade, encountering four Doctors along the way. | ||
