They are unable to find an escape, and do not realise that a young boy called Adric has stowed away aboard the TARDIS. Arriving on a primitive planet where the local inhabitants fear the Three Who Rule, they soon find themselves facing a hideous creature from Time Lord legends. Long thought dead, the Doctor must confront a blood-sucking monster that is very much alive ... BackgroundState of Decay started life as a script called The Vampire Mutations and was originally scheduled to open the fifteenth series of Doctor Who a few years earlier in 1977. It featured the Fourth Doctor and his then companion Leela up against the horrific vampires. However, Terrance Dicks' tale of vampire awakenings clashed with the BBC's expensive new adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the Head of Dramas at the time didn't want the story to appear to be sending up the serial. The script was suddenly moved into the Doctor Who script cupboard, and a hastily written (though still rather chilling) story, Horror at Fang Rock, was supplied by Dicks to replace it. But luckily the vampire story wasn't forgotten about, and when John Nathan-Turner took over as the new producer in 1979, Dicks' old script was resurrected, dusted down, and moved into E-Space to become State of Decay. Another big change to the original script was the inclusion of new companion Adric. Although this wouldn't be his opening story, it was the first that Matthew Waterhouse recorded for Doctor Who. Dicks found this character a difficult addition to the script and opted to bring out rarely-seen traits in the Alzarian. The evocative location scenes were filmed in Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire - the perfect setting for a story of this nature, as it had been backdrop to many a Hammer Horror Film in the 1960s and 70s. State of Decay is a fine example of Doctor Who at its bloodcurdling gothic best. | ||
