BackgroundAfter the successful Key to Time season, producer Graham Williams, returned to a more traditional season of adventures for the 17th season of Doctor Who. A randomiser was fitted to the TARDIS controls so that the time travellers wouldn't know where they were going, and he wanted Daleks to open the series. Destiny of the Daleks randomly brought the TARDIS to Skaro, The Doctor thought he had been there before - and he was right! The series had also used the location before, although not for Skaro. One of the quarries, Winspit in Dorset, had last been used in the Patrict Troughton story, The Underwater Menace (1967). A word or two must be said about the story's design. Destiny of the Daleks was written by Dalek Creator Terry Nation - the last story he would write for the series. New script editor Douglas Adams made his mark by introducing more humour, some of which surprisingly centred around the Dalek's (then) inability to climb stairs. Unable to convince Mary Tamm, the original Romana, to stay in the role, the part was offered to Lalla Ward, who had played Princess Astra in the previous series. The chemistry between Tom Baker and Lalla Ward was to go onto become one of the most successful Doctor and companion partnerships. Destiny of the Daleks firmly establishes the conflicts between Davros, the Doctor and the Daleks. It was a thrilling narrative tussle that was to continue for many years to come. | ||
