Ravaged decades ago by an interstellar war between the Argolin and the Foamasi, Argolis now hosts the Leisure Hive - an ideal retreat for tourists from all over the cosmos. But a series of 'accidents' leads the Doctor and Romana to discover that the Hive holds dark secrets ... BackgroundIt is perhaps something of a cliche to describe The Leisure Hive in terms of a new era for Doctor Who, a new look for a new decade, a fresh start for a series that was perhaps getting a little tired ... But never had Doctor Who been altered so radically in one fell swoop. Incoming producer John Nathan-Turner's 'new broom' philosophy saw the series usher in a new title sequence and, more radically, a new theme tune arrangement, ringing the changes from the very first moment of the first episode of The Leisure Hive. The distinctive direction of Lovett Bickford, the move to radiophonic music courtesy of Peter Howell, and the branding of the Doctor's new costume all come together to give this story a style all on its own, Tom Baker, now in his seventh year as the Doctor, adopts a more moody and melancholy style, while the character takes more of a background role in the story than usual. Yet despite all these bold innovations, Doctor Who at the time found itself up against stiff competition, in the form of ITV's American import science fiction series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and viewing figures were several million down on the preceding season. But slowly the viewers returned, and Doctor Who soon had a solid foothold with which to begin the new decade. | ||
