BackgroundIt is the nature of things to change, and most TV programmes are no different. But Doctor Who is almost unique in its ability to change the regular cast over the years, and it's this formula more than any other that lies at the cornerstone of the series' longevity. By the time of The Hand of Fear in 1976, the series had been unusually stable for a lengthy period. It is not uncommon for actors to form a close bond, and build up a real chemistry together on-screen, but there was something unique about Sarah Jane Smith and the forth Doctor. Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen had notched up two-and-a-half years together. However, change is inevitable. Elizabeth Sladen's decision to leave the series after three and a half years was understandable - most 'companions' generally stuck around for a year or two at most. It is fortuitous that the production team decided against killing off Sarah, as the character has become an iconic figure in the history of the series. She returned with K9 in the Doctor Who spin-off K9 and Company, for the twentieth anniversary story The Five Doctors, and now with Tenth Doctor David Tennant in School Reunion. Change may be inevitable, but some things remain constant. Sarah Jane Smith would seem to be one of those constants in the history of Doctor Who. | ||
