It brings the Doctor, Romansa, Adric and K-9 to a crumbling ruin in a lonely white void, where another ship is also stranded and in trouble. Will the TARDIS and its crew ever escape this strange otherworld? The answer lies inside the Gateway, but as the Doctor is about to discover, not everyone wants to go home ... BackgroundWarriors' Gate is the final part of the E-Space trilogy. A complex and ambitious story, it rounds off the Doctor's trip into a strange universe and uses one of the cheapest sets in the history of Doctor Who - a massive greensceen studio with nothing in it! Writer Steve Gallagher's script is heavily influenced by the French writer and director Jean Cocteau, in particular his films Le Belle et la Bete (1946) and Orphee (1950), and although the four episodes are a fine example of Doctor Who, it was trying to push the boundaries in a BBC studio, tried the patience of producer John Nathan-Turner, leading to much conflict on the set. This story is the last to feature Lalla Ward's Romana. After two years on the show, it was time for the Time Lady to leave the TARDIS. Romana may have left the Doctor, but Lalla Ward went on to marry Tom Baker. The marriage, however, was short-lived. It was also time to say goodbye to robot dog K-9. His departure was much-publicised at the time and after several false starts that season - being blown up in Brighton, mistreated on Tigella, beheaded on Alzarius and left in the TARDIS for most of State of Decay - K-9 trundled off into the (black and white) distance with Romana at the end of the fourth episode. Surreal, clever and ultimately moving, Warriors' Gate is the end of the E-Space trilogy, and sets the scene perfectly for Tom Baker's final two adventures as the Doctor. | ||
