BackgroundSeason 20 of Doctor Who was unprecedented, setting out to celebrate its long history with a succession of stories revisiting its own mythology. In 1973, the series had marked its 10th birthday with The Three Doctors, and introduced Omega as the villain of the piece. This brilliant but tragic figure from Gallifreyan legend was portrayed as little more than a ranting egomaniac on his first outing, and a decade later, an attempt to redress the balance seemed appropriate. Writer Johnny Byrne was initially faced with the challenge of combining two key plot elements; Tegan was to rejoin the TARDIS, and Amsterdam was to feature as the main location, since it had been decided by producer John Nathan-Turner that the series would undertake its first overseas filming since City of Death in 1979. Although Omega was something of an eleventh hour addition to the script, his presence ensured that Doctor Who's anniversary season opened on a suitably reflective note. Notably however, it is through Omega that we are permitted a further glimpse at the darker side Gallifreyan society, reminding us that treachery is not unthinkable amongst the elite of the High Council. Arc of Infinity not only foreshadows events in The Five Doctors, but also offers an unprecedented glimpse at the future face of the Doctor himself ... | ||
