Dangerous experiments are being carried out there that could affect the future of all life, and they must be stopped. But why is the Doctor so determined to help his former enemy - the greedy, opportunistic Sil? And why has he turned against his companion, Peri? One thing is certain, someone will die ... BackgroundSPOILER ALERT! This text contains important plot revelations. The decision to make the fourteen episodes of the twenty-third season form a trial for the Doctor emulated the fact that the show, after the cancellation crisis and eighteen month hiatus, was on ratings trial itself. The format was inspired by Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol, and each story was to serve as evidence from the Doctor's past, present and future. Parts five to eight were set in the present, immediately preceding the Doctor's arrival in the courtroom and, though there is some confusion as to what actually occurs and what is fabricated in this story, it is arguably the segment that is most remembered. The villainous Sil, created by Philip Martin for his Season Twenty-Two story, Vengeance on Varos, proved so popular with the production team that he was asked to bring the character back for a second encounter with the Doctor. Martin had started work on a different story featuring Sil - Mission to Magnus - but it was later dropped when the series was put on hiatus. Martin was also given the job of killing off Peri, Nicola Bryant had worried that her acting career was being curtailed by her association with the series. She was pleased that her send-off would be a strong one and was later disappointed with the retroactive happier ending given to her character. Both Martrin's stories have been deemed some of the most violent in the series' history, but the special status of these episodes is assured not because of its violence but because of Peri's dramatic and disturbing exit. | ||
