BackgroundAfter three successful years running twice-weekly, Doctor Who returned to its prior traditional timeslot on Saturday evenings with Attack of the Cybermen, the first story of the new season for Colin Baker's Doctor. As a result of decisions made by BBC1 Controller Alan Hart, the format of the show was refreshed, doubling the episode length to forty-five minutes and halving the season from twenty-six episodes to thirteen. With these dramatic changes, there was a desire to anchor them with familiar elements. Attack of the Cybermen gives fans a story laden with continuity. Past references include: 76 Trotters Lane (An Unearthly Child), Dalek mercenary, Lytton (Resurrection of the Daleks), Cybermen in London sewers (The Invasion), cryogenic hibernation units (Tomb of the Cybermen), and the destruction of the Cybermen's home planet, Mondas (The Tenth Planet). It is a shopping list of Cyber history and as such presented a controversial, adult re-imaging of these classic Cyber stories. Nonetheless for all the change there was still the Doctor, and Colin Baker's rambunctious, alien, ostentatious Time Lord is rarely better than he is here. He was a reliable constant, and the story a glossy action-packed opener with popular monsters designed to start the new season with a bang. | ||
