Danger is waiting for them there, including a trip two hundred years into the future without the TARDIS ... BackgroundNew Years's day in 1972 was particularly exciting if you were a Doctor Who fan. Not only was your favourite series returning for its ninth season but the Daleks were also back for the first time in five years - this time in colour, too. The last time the Daleks had appeared in Doctor Who was in The Evil of the Daleks (1967). In that story, viewers had witnessed the final end of the creatures. But Daleks were too good, and headline grabbing, to stay hidden forever - so the production team decided to launch Jon Pertwee's third series with their much-publicised return. Day of the Daleks had a specially shot television trailer featuring Daleks by the Thames, plus an illustrated Radio Times cover, and if you entered the competition inside the magazine, you got the chance to win your very own Dalek. All this excitement could not have masked the fact that only three Daleks props were available for the production, two grey and one gold. And with all the best will in the world, it was always going to be difficult to stage a full-on Dalek attack on Auderly House at the end of the fourth episode with only three Daleks ... However, for the DVD release, as well as containing the original version, you now get the chance to watch a new-improved Day of the Daleks. New shots enhance this thrilling slice of the Jon Pertwee era, updated effects complement the 1972 production, and finally, the Daleks, with new voices, get to invade the final episode in a much grander style. | ||
