There they find a group of scared performers who live in fear of the sinister and creepy Chief Clown. But what it so dangerous about this particular circus, why is there such a small audience and will Ace be able to overcome her fear before it's too late? BackgroundThe Greatest Show in the Galaxy was intended to be a mixture of studio and location filming and follow the typical set up of recording the location material first - in this case, a Dorset quarry - before moving into BBC Television Centre to record the interior scenes. However, this Doctor Who story was threatened with cancellation when asbestos was discovered at the BBC studios during renovations. Production ground to a halt while the problem was investigated and producer John Nathan-Turner and director Alan Wareing were left with an incomplete Doctor Who story on their hands. Luckily setting a story in a circus became a distinct advantage. A giant tent was put up in the somewhat noisy car park of BBC Elstree studios, home of EastEnders, and with a few modifications to the script, filming was completed. The end result of this troubled production is, amazingly, one of the most atmospheric and visually impressive stories from the end of the classic era of Doctor Who. Don't worry about the continuity errors brought about by the change in transmission order. Originally this story was intended to appear as the second story in Season 25 and not the last, which means a couple of quite obvious mistakes stand out if you watch the stories in order. Just put it down to the timey-wimey magic of Doctor Who, take a ringside seat, and enjoy the story. It is definitely one of the greatest shows from its era. | ||
