'As I remember' - Lady Asquith in conversation with Kenneth Harris, was broadcast on BBC Television on 30 April 1967 to celebrate her eightieth birthday, and subsequently repeated in the Home Service. The programme was highly praised and Lady Asquith deluged with letters of congratulation. Viewers and listeners were captivated by a combination of historical reminiscence and illuminating and amusing anecdote. Lady Asquith, still perhaps better known as Lady Violet Bonham Carter, was born in a political context. Her father, H. H. Asquith, was an active politician, later to become Prime Minister. Her mother died when she was four and a half and her father had her bed moved into his room. She used to wake early and demand to be told what had happened in the House the night before. Indeed, she says, 'House' always meant House of Commons to her, never a human habitation. She remembers being taken by her father to have lunch with Gladstone when she was six years old and her disillusion with one aspect of this legendary figure. When she was seven her father married again. His second wife was Margot Tennant, famed for her conversational frankness. She said of her husband, 'His modesty amounts to deformity.' When H. H. Asquith became Prime Minister in 1908 the family moved to 10 Downing Street, still in those days a family house as well as an office of state. At the age of nineteen Lady Violet met Winston Churchill - the meeting which she here describes so vividly. They became life-long friends although the friendship was interrupted when Churchill joined the Coalition Government of 1918 to be resumed in the 1930s when they were united in recognition of the monsterous threat of the rise of Hitler in Germany. This conversation covers seventy-five years and the recollections of the past are no less vivid and exciting than the analysis of our own time. As Kenneth Harris said in an introduction to the programme in Radio Times: 'Words, thoughts, attitudes and moods she is, in fact a great artist in the field of talk, with the gifts not only of the analyst and reporter, but of the orator as well. Indeed, in conversation, she affects me as a great actress might, playing the role of a great woman in a chronicle of the past. Except that Lady Violet's is itself the authentic voice of history and she plays nobody but her inimitable self.' This record was re-released as REB 6.
