| A BRITISH SAMPLER A souvenir in sound of England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland This disc presents a musical tour of Britain, sampling some of the rich musical fare which the tourist may find as he travels around the four countries. British music differs widely from one part of the land to another; it is as varied as the country's scenic beauties and as full of charm, interest and surprise. It expresses the different racial characters, the forms of society, the historical traditions, the ways of life of the peoples who make up the British race. Recent years have seen a renascence in British music, which is now enjoyed throughout the World by people whose tastes range in the spectrum of musical appreciation from the Beatles to Benjamin Britten. This revival draws inspiration from the nation's rich store of folk song and traditional music. but it is based on no self-conscious resuscitation of a dying art, no artificial revival contrieved by anti-quarians and scholars. As the vigour and originality of compemporary popular music show, British music is a living reality. All kinds of music are represented on this disc - from true folk song and traditional tunes centuries old to the latest creations from Merseyside and swinging London. many of the numbers have been specially recorded for a ''British Sampler'', others are from the BBC archives and from the BTA's sound library, and one or two have been created electronically by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. | ||
