BackgroundAnyone who watched Earthshock on its original transmission cannot fail to remember the huge impact it had at the time. The surprise re-appearance in the series of the Cybermen, after seven years away from our screens, was arguably Doctor Who's last well-kept secret, and the sheer pace of Eric Saward's script and Peter Grimwade's direction make for gripping viewing. The sleek, newly-designed Cybermen conveyed both power and menace, and the story managed to recapture the base-under-siege tension that had been a feature of some of the finest stories in the programme's past. At the same time, the show was trying to find a new direction with Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, after seven years with Tom Baker in the title role. No more would the Doctor be an all-knowing superhero, and the final scenes of Earthshock shattered once and for all the cosy air of invulnerability that had pervaded Doctor Who.
