A rare flower may hold the answer ... BackgroundBlack Orchid is quite different in style from any Doctor Who story before or since. With no monsters or alien threat in the story, the only element of science fiction is the TARDIS and its crew. Essentially a murder mystery set in the 1920s, it is the first story with a completely historical setting since The Highlanders at the beginning of Patrick Troughton's era. For the nineteenth season of Doctor Who, producer John Nathan-Turner decided to give each of the Doctor's companions a story where they got a bit more to do than was normal. So while bossy air hostess Tegan got into trouble for dabbling with the Mara in Kinda and the ill-fated Adric's showcase was challenging Cybermen in Earthshock, Black Orchid gives the gentler Nyssa an opportunity to shine. By this story, Peter Davison is well into his stride as the energetic and youthful Fifth Doctor - and for the first and only time, he doesn't look out of place in his distinctive Edwardian cricketing costume. Cat and crew were troubled by terrible weather during location filming. What is meant to be height of summer was filmed in a cold and windy October, and some of the actors in their fancy dress costumes froze while glasses blew off the tables and shattered on the terrace! Black Orchid is the first two-part tale since The Sontaran Experiment in 1975 - and set a trend which was continued once a year throughout the Peter Davison era. An enjoyable romp, Black Orchid is a fine example of a Doctor Whodunnit ... | ||
