Confused, angry and acting strangely, the new Doctor decides to become a hermit, so takes his concerned companion Peri to a desolate asteroid where he plans to live for several centuries. The time travellers soon uncover a plot that threatens the entire galaxy. But why has an alien Gastropod kidnapped twins and will the Doctor recover in time to find out? BackgroundThe Twin Dilemma had a lot to live up to. Appearing at the end of a successful and popular set of adventures, viewers in 1984 had been treated to crowd-pleasing monsters from the past during Warriors of the Deep and Resurrection of the Daleks; arch-nemesis the Master had returned in Planet of Fire; Tegan, Turlough and Kamelion left the TARDIS, and a promising new character, Peri, joined the Doctor on his travels; and finally, in the previous story, Peter Davison regenerated in the closing moments of the gritty The Caves of Androzani. A first for Doctor Who, viewers were promised a complete adventure with a new Doctor to round off that series - without having to wait a whole year to see their favourite Time Lord in action. Other than the Hartnell to Troughton handover, it became normal for Doctors to regenerate in his last story of their final season. Sadly, The Twin Dilemma was a story beset with problems and it is perhaps not the most auspicious start for Colin Baker's much-underrated Doctor. The original script didn't work, and had to be rewritten by script editor Eric Saward, industrial action at the BBC played havoc with studio recording and the decision to make the new Doctor thoroughly unlikable and dangerous after regenerating is, in retrospect, a bad move. However, it is an ambitious story, with some genuinely tense opening scenes in the TARDIS and a great (and loud!) performance by Colin Baker. Whether viewers liked it or not, one thing was certain - the sixth Doctor had arrived ... | ||
