All will be revealed at the centre of the labyrinthine Power Complex on Skonnos ... BackgroundThe Horns of Nimon brought the seventeenth season of Doctor Who to an untimely end. The planned and part-filmed finale was never shown when industrial action at the BBC interrupted studio recording and left Shada, the incomplete story, to itself become the stuff of myths and legends. Shown over Christmas 1979, the studio-bound The Horns of Nimon is inspired by the Greek legend about a young boy named Theseus and a part-bull, part-man creature called the Minotaur - but with a science-fiction twist. It is definitely an unsubtle homage to a famous legend, but no attempt is ever made to hide this fact. Characters and names are deliberately similar, the Nimon can be found in a labyrinth, and the Doctor even refers to the legend within the story. The Horns of Nimon has many 'lasts' associated with it. It is producer Graham William's last Doctor Who story and also the final script that Douglas Adams script-edited. David Brierly gets his last credit as the robot dog K9's voice (John Leeson returned in the next series). It is the last time viewers get to see the iconic time-tunnel title sequence and hear Delia Derbyshire's version of the theme tune. Composer Dudley Simpson, who had worked on the series since 1964, composed his last score for these episodes, too. This is also the end of Doctor Who in the 1970s. When the series returned under new producer John Nathan-Turner in August 1980, the style, tone and production values looked dramatically different ... | ||
