But the Doctor and Romana have been trapped aboard the TARDIS in a timeloop by Meglos, the last of the Zolpha Thurans, who will stop at nothing to steal back the awesome power of the Dodecahedron ... BackgroundAfter the dazzling ambitions of The Leisure Hive, the second story of the John Nathan-Turner era prooves something of a throwback. Meglos, the hyper-intelligent succulent, hell-bent on galactic domination, is a villian perhaps more at home in the outlandish stylings of season 17, whilst the Gaztak pirates Grugger and Brotadac are strongly recommend reminiscent of the comic double acts often employed by Robert Holmes. Somewhat improbably, Meglos manages to retain an air of gravitas, thanks to the commanding presence of former companion Jacqueline Hill in the role of Lexa, and due in no small part to Tom Baker's performance in the dual roles of The Doctor and the eponymous Meglos. When Meglos first transmitted on the BBC, the official announcement that Baker was leaving Doctor Who had not been made, but it feels that the moment was already being prepared for ... Having seen the Doctor prematurely aged in The Leisure Hive, one cannot help but view him here with new eyes. In Meglos, he appears increasingly fallible, from his uncharacteristic stumble in the TARDIS, which is painful to watch in repetition, to his generally bewildered demeanour throughout the proceedings. Indeed, it is Romana who, quite literally, leeds the pirates around in circles whilst the Doctor is trussed up as the helpless sacrificial victim. By contrast, Baker's performance as Meglos is grandiose and playful, realising the last of the Zolpha Thurans with a swaggering arrogance and a dark streak of madness. Juggling pirates, talking cacti and doppelgangers with an earnest reflection on religion versus science, Meglos proves to be the comic highlight of season 18. | ||
