The missing episodes 1 and 4 are presented using photographic stills and a restored soundtrack. BackgroundThis is as close as Doctor Who ever got to a cartoon.It's unashamedly barking; the lost city of Atlantis, Fish People, a mad scientist, the end of the world. There's even a moment of high peril as the Doctor and his companions are suspended over a shark tank - you could be forgiven fpor thinking you've tuned into 1960s Batman. You may wish you had. In one of the maddest Doctor Who stories ever, writer Geoffrey Orme reimagines the programme as a heightened comic-bster movie on a shoestring budget, It's a bold move; one which has divided fans since 1967. There is still much to enjoy however; Patrick Troughton is finessing the role of the Second Doctor are there are some wonderful character moments throughout. Frazer Hines, shoehorned into the script after his last-minute addition to the TARDIS crew, is utterly likeable in the role of Jamie (his stronger Scottish accent will soon wear off), and Joseph Furst's Zaroff is deliciously OTT. On the downside, lovely Anneke Wills is criminally underused (writer Orme giving her character a personality transplant instead of gills) and the plot is utterly mental. For years, Episode 3 of this story was the lone survivor, until 2011 when Episode 2 was returned by private collector Terry Burnett. We love him. Episodes 1 & 4 remain missing, but have been recreated using photographer John Cura's wonderful off-air stills and a restored soundtrack. Finally we can complete our Doctor Who DVD collections with this special release. | ||
