Auden) Peter Pears (tenor) and Benjamin Britten (piano) from a BBC broadcast from the Aldeburgh Festival on 18.6.69. A CHARM OF LULLABIES Helen Watts (contralto) and Benjamin Britten (piano) from a BBC Third programme broadcast on 31.3.62. (Transferred from an archive disc.) HELEN WATTS Helen Watts is one of Britain's most travelled and oft recorded contraltos, a fact officially recognised in 1978 by the award of the C. B. E. for her services to Music. She has taken part in well over one hundred and fifty recordings during her long career, and is well-known on the continent as in Britain. She was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, and was fortunate to attend a school with a strong musical tradition whose music department was under the guidance of Ernest Read. Her concert and recital repertoire is catholic; she is, however, one of the great Bach singers in the world and has recorded with Helmutt Rilling all the Bach Cantatas. She is also famous for her Mahler interpretations and has recorded Mahler Symphonies 2 and 3 with Sir Georg Solti, as well as singing this composer's works with such conductors as Abbado, Giulini, Haitink, Leinsdorf and Maazal. In fact, in concerts she has sung with most of the world's leading conductors. Her opera repertoire, though smaller, is equally varied. She has appeared at two Salzburg Festivals - ojne production was with Karajan. She has toured Russia with the English Opera Group singing Lucretia in Britten's 'The Rape of Lucretia'. She has also sung in several Ring cycles at Covent Garden and appeared with the Welsh National Opera and the Scottish National Opera. She sings frequently on BBC Radio and Television and in 1978 a biographical film was made about her by BBC TV.
