| BALLAD FOLK ''Ballad Folk'' was conceived as a television series about traditional folk music in Scotland, to be presented by Jean Redpath. Jean's is a rare ralent - total commitment to Scotland's oral traditiopn, the ability to get inside the musical soul of her people and a lovely voice that has been described as ''magical'', ''flute-like'' and ''as pure and soft as a Highland burn''. Born and brought up in Leven, Jean has spent most of the last fifteen years in the USA maturing as an artist but remaining unyielding in her purist approach to folk music. 'Folk' music has become sadly tarnished in recent years but this album reflects the Redpath approach. no tartan treasures, no heuchter-teuchter music, no so-called folksy numbers but the songs and ballads of an emotional people sung by Jean and fellow artists who care deeply about their heritage. Jean is a lady of conviction and in selecting guests to join her in the television series she consciously paid tribute to artists that she genuinely admires. Unaccompanied singing is central to Jean's own repertoire and all the individual singers on this album sing in that style: the incomparable Lizzie Higgins from Aberdeen who interprets the big ballads so distinctively; Charlie Murray, a farm worker from Forfar, in the direct line of bothy ballad singers; Wille Scott, eighty year old retired Border shepherd, who has become a legend in his own lifetime; Jimmy Hutchison, a carpenter from Earlston and one of the pioneers of traditional folk festivals in Scotland; Gordeanna McCulloch from Rutherglen, one of the younger generation of folk singers, who was introduced to the oral tradition by Norman Buchan. The duos and groups comprise some of the best-known faces on the folk scene. Archie Fisher, backed by Allan Barty on fiddle, has attained international stature as an interpreter of Scottish folk song. Archie's sister Cilla and her husband Artie Trezise have also been widely acclaimed for their bold performances. Mirk are a lively group from Thurso, comprising another husband and wife team, Marjorie and Ian Sinclair, backed by Ray Crompton on guitar / mandolin. Teh Gaugers, Peter Hall, Tom Spiers and Arthur Watson, are a versatile and talented group of musicians from Aberdeen. The television series adopted a thematic approach to Scotland's folk song traditional - Love, Work, the Supernatural, War and Exile, and 'Happiness Is Shy' (which is how Burns described having a good time Scots-style). The tracks taken on this album are taken direct from the television programmes and if they help to bring an increased awareness of Scotland's rich oral tradition - that will be no small achievement.
