| In some ways this story had the makings of a good story, but I think it really has not aged with time well. Maybe it is the special effects, or making the acting - I am not sure. | ||

BackgroundThe Brain of Morbius marked the high point of Doctor Who's gothic period. It cheerfully borrowed horror film movie cliches including a mad scientist, a brain in a jar, torch-bearing villagers and lashings of dry ice. But Morbius had its roots in a more futuristic concept. Terrance Dicks' original story concerned the relationship between man and machine. In this version, a robot that understood function, but not beauty, made Morbius' horrific new body. Script editor Robert Holmes rewrote the tale in his trademark gothic style, and re-imagined the monster's creator as the Frankenstein-like Solon. Dicks was unhappy and wanted his name removed from the story, asking his colleague to think up "some bland pseudonym" to use for the writer's credit - a request Holmes interpreted literally. Besides his contribution to the script, Holmes made a cameo appearance during the "mind-bending" sequence in episode four, along with director Christopher Barry and producer Philip Hinchcliffe. Dicks' and Holmes' idea of a dying Time Lord trying to prolong life proved potent, and was resurrected when the Master returned to the series in The Deadly Assassin (1975). On the surface, The Brain of Morbius paid homage to vintage Universal Studios horror. Underneath, it explored the meaning - and the necessity - of morality.
