One of the supersonic Concordes has disappeared mid-air and the Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa soon become involved in a hunt for the missing aeroplane. But what connects its disappearance to prehistoric Earth and why is a mysterious sorcerer so interested in the Doctor's TARDIS? A flight through time will reveal all. BackgroundTime-Flight brought the 19th series of Doctor Who to an end. That year, the programme had successfully moved to its new weekday evening slot, with two episodes airing each week, Peter Davison's debut series was being enjoyed by up to 10 million viewers every episode. Time-Flight wasn't quite the spectacular season finale we might expect from Doctor Who and, at first glance, elements of the story seem ambitious even on paper. With not just one but two Concordes ending up on the Earth over 140 million years ago and, at the climax of the story, for one of those planes taking off from the prehistoric landscape, it was never going to be the easiest of productions to be made on its budget. It's a brave attempt that, with the use of stock footage and stretch of the imagination, almost but doesn't quite work. More successful is the location work at Heathrow Airport, with some scenes set against dramatic snowy backdrop. Time-Flight saw the return of the Master, last seen in that year's first story Castrovalva. Disguised as sorcerer Kalid, his return was kept a surprise, with Anthony Ainley's name credited as Leon Ny Taiy (an anagram of Tony Ainley) in Radio Times. Another surprise was the shock departure of Tegan. Janet Fielding's mouthy air steward was always going to return, however, and being left behind on the top of Terminal One was designed as a cliffhanger to keep the viewer's interest. The character appeared, complete with new look, in Arc of Infinity the following year. | ||
