The planet is on the brink of war and ruled by an insane and much-feared dictator, who punishes Karfelons by throwing them into the Timelash. But why is their leader never seen in person? And what links Karfel with 19th-century Scotland? The Doctor arrives just in time to find out. BackgroundAs with every series of Doctor Who - old and new - there are always episodes that have to cost less to produce than others. Timelash, by necessity, fell into the cheaper category. Unfortunately, this tends to show in the finished production with dull, uninspiring sets and costumes. However, since Karfel is ruled by a leader who doesn't like shiny surfaces, you could be mistaken for thinking this is intentional. Timelash has been much criticised for its production standards, unimaginative direction, padded scenes and over-the-top acting from certain cast members. Guest star Paul Darrow infamously based his performance as the misguided Tekker on Laurence Olivier's performance in Richard III. Writer Glen McCoy had originally submitted a script featuring Daleks. Script Editor Eric Saward asked McCoy to revise his script, but keep certain elements - the time tunnel linking two different times, the half-man / half-monster and the character HG Wells. The resulting story borrows many ideas from Wells novels. Transmitting not long after it was decided the series was to be rested for 18 months, Timelash is an example of Doctor Who on a budget. But, sandwiched between The Two Doctors and Revelation of the Daleks - two of the most popular Sixth Doctor stories - Timelash isn't all bad. | ||
