As the Black Guardian pressures Turlough to complete his side of their murderous pact, it seems the Doctor may not survive to cross the finish line ... BackgroundIn many ways, Enlightenment is a throwback to the historical adventures from the early years of Doctor Who. The richness of period detail creates a sense of studious accuracy which is then repeatedly challenged by the introduction of anachronistic elements as the story unfolds. It is an effective ploy, spinning out the mystery, confounding initial impressions, and delivering the shocking reveal at the end of part one. The Eternals themselves are a fascinating race, creepy and tragic in equal measure. Their place in the universe and their relationship with the Time Lords is skirted around, but the emptiness of an infinite existence echoes the self-inflicted torment of the scientists in Mawdryn Undead, and foreshadows the punchline of The Five Doctors. Turlough's anguish continues unabated, easily securing him the most challenging debut of any companion in Doctor Who. His attempted suicide is shocking (if not entirely convincing), but subsequently glossed-over as his route to team up with the perfidious Wrack. The significance of the event is not lost on the Doctor, however, who spends much of this story as a silent observer. Another incarnation might have secured Turlough's loyalty with impassioned oratory. Instead, he stands mute when the time comes for the boy to make his choice, apparently satisfied that Turlough will do the right thing ... Dramatically, although Enlightenment proves a somewhat unsatisfactory conclusion to the 'Guardian trilogy', it has a grandeur, spectacle and intelligence which mean it has stood the test of time considerably better than other stories of this era. | ||
