King John is visiting the castle of Sir Ranulph Fitzwilliam. The arrival of the TARDIS disturbs a medieval joust, but the Doctor and his companions are proclaimed to be friendly demons by the King, who seems strangely interested in their 'blue engine'. It soon becomes clear that neither King John of his Champion, Sir Giles Estram, are who they pretend to be. One of the Doctor's oldest and deadliest enemies threatens the future of democracy on Earth, and he must be stopped! BackgroundOriginally intended as an interlude between the Black Guardian Trilogy and The Return (of the Daleks), The King's Demons found itself promoted to season finale as a result of the industrial action which plagued work on Doctor Who throughout the latter months of 1982. Although Terence Dudley's previous scripts for the series (Four To Doomsday and Black Orchid) had also featured historical elements, The King's Demons was notable as the first story since the Hartnell era to portray a real historical figure - albeit an alien robot impersonation! As a period piece, the story is beautifully realised, making fine use of a distinguished cast and an authentic location. However, whilst the image of the Doctor and the Master mentally wrestling over a futuristic robot in a medieval castle is bewitching, the Master's presence at this point in history and his odd choice of disguise is questionable. Ultimately, the story's main function is to introduce Kamelion, whom producer John Nathan-Turner had envisaged as the android successor to K-9. Unfortunately, the idea of a shape-shifting robot was considered more enthralling than the reality. Whilst Kamelion's design was undoubtedly striking, and his characterisation realised with great aplomb by Gerald Flood in both guises, the Doctor's newest companion was significantly undermined by the practicalities of the physical prop. Tragically, it was Kamelion's destiny to stand in a dusty corner of the TARDIS until he was once again employed to do the Master's bidding ... | ||
