As the black-elad multitudes made their way up the hill to the majestic Ally Pally on a scorching summer's day none of us realised we were about to witness the end of an era.

The set the Stranglers played that evening was hotter than the day itself had been. Yet only hours after the show, founder member guitarist and siger Hugh Cornwell decided he was quitting the band after 17 years. Fortunately, for posterity the concert was both filmed and recorded.

This special limited edition live CD single is released to mark Hugh's last appearance with the Stranglers.

'Always the Sun', an approprite track for such a hot day, has been an ever-present live favourite since it first emerged in 1986.

Nuclear device power-kicked the second encore and All day and all of the night, the third. Always guaranteed by bring the house -or palace- down neither track has been released live before.

Finally, Punch and Judy, which has closed many a Stranglers show in the last few years did so again this night and so consequently became the last song performed by Hugh with the Stranglers.

The remaining Stranglers have regrouped and are already working on the next album with a new line-up. This line-up includes guitarist John Ellis, who, having played in JJ's Euroband, deputised for Hugh at the Rainbow in 1980 and hlpedbeef up the live shows throughout 1990, is now a fully-fledged Strangler. John is featured playing live here and so this serves as an introduction to him as well as a tribute to what is to many the end of a very special era - but also the dawn of another.

Further information

The Stranglers are an English rock band who emerged via the punk rock scene. The current members are Jean-Jacques Burnel, Baz Warne, Jim Macaulay and Toby Hounsham. Past members were Jet Black, Hugh Cornwell, Hans Warmling, Dave Greenfield, John Ellis and Paul Roberts.

Scoring some 23 UK top 40 singles and 17 UK top 40 albums to date in a career spanning four decades, the Stranglers are one of the longest-surviving and most "continuously successful" bands to have originated in the UK punk scene. Formed as the Guildford Stranglers on 11 September 1974 in Guildford, Surrey, they originally built a following within the mid-1970s pub rock scene. While their aggressive, no-compromise attitude identified them as one of the instigators of the UK punk rock scene that followed, their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre and the group went on to explore a variety of musical styles, from new wave, art rock and gothic rock through the sophisti-pop of some of their 1980s output. They had major mainstream success with their 1982 single "Golden Brown". Their other hits include "No More Heroes", "Peaches", "Always the Sun" and "Skin Deep" and the 2003 Top 40 hit "Big Thing Coming", which was seen as a return to form.
