Synopsis

Responding to a distress signal, the Doctor and Ace arrive near the village of Carbury, where a nuclear missile convoy has run into difficulties. The peace of the English countryside is shattered as UNIT troops are besieged by armoured knights from another dimension. As the crisis deepens, Brigadier Lethbridghe-Stewart is called out of retirement to join the battle. Together, he and the Doctor must face the Destroyer, a fearsome demon summoned by the witch queen Morgaine to devour the world ...

Background

Despite its fragile position in the television landscape of 1989, Doctor Who launched into its 26th season with a renewed sense of direction. Script Editor Andrew Cartmel's vision for the series was finally taking shape. It would reveal a darker side of the Doctor's nature, and his companion Ace would be forced to face her personal demons.

The Doctor's time-travelling adventures have always allowed him to rub shoulders with famous characters throughout history, and even resulted in him being mistaken for one or two of them. Battlefield takes this idea a step further, and offers unprecedented hints of Doctor's off-screen exploits. In a tale where the definition of magic (or science) is merely a matter of time, accepting that he is Merlin is hardly a challenge. The revelation, offered with scant explanation, evokes a potent new mystique around the Doctor, and creates a disconcerting sense that he is hiding something from the viewer.

As Ace is left to face a very real demon, it is the Brigadier's act of supreme sacrifice which has the biggest impact. In the face of such bravery, the slightest hint that the Doctor may be playing with people's lives is all the more unsettling.

Combining powerful and evocative mythology with a traditional UNIT tale, Battlefield is a clashing of ancient and modern, pitting girl power against brute force in an action-packed romp that forces us to consider the Doctor in a new light.
