Synopsis

When the Doctor and Ace arrive at a secret military base during World War II, they discover that a centuries-old Viking curse is bringing terror to its inhabitants. As hideous vampires rise from the sea and Russian commandos begin to close in, they are confronted not only with a mystery from the distant past, but also a terrifying vision of mankind's future ...

Background

In the late 1980s, Doctor Who was caught in a period of transition, as new script editor Andrew Cartmel, alongside a reinvigorated John Nathan-Turner as Producer, struggled to breathe fresh life into the series. Against a backdrop of curtailed episode counts and competitive scheduling on BBC1, Doctor Who was perhaps only just beginning to find its feet again when the series was taken off the air. The Curse of Fenrtic was the penultimate story shown by the BBC, and ably demonstrates the direction in which Doctor Who was moving and evolving.

The character of the Doctor was darkened, and the character of Ace was given more development than most previous companions had enjoyed. The Curse of Fenric bravely attempts to hint at a conception of the character, and shows that maybe he is more than just a Time Lord ...

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
