Synopsis

A sonic time scan draws the TARDIS to the Fetch Priory on Earth. There, the Doctor and Leela discover an impossibly old human skull that is the key to a nightmare from the Time Lords' past.

A murderous monster stalks the priory grounds; and within, someone is intent on unleashing a malevolent creature that feeds on death itself ...

Background

Doctor Who's gothic period drew towards its natural end with Image of the Fendahl. With Graham Williams incumbent as Producer for the Fifteenth Season, the overall focus of the programme started to shift towards new methods of storytelling. However, the final script to be edited by Robert Holmes contains many signature gothic trademarks; a haunted priory and its grounds, an innocent woman plagued by nightmare visions, and the psychological and physical terrors of the supernatural.

Writer Chris Boucher, unaware of the increased production demands that night-time shooting entails, set much of the story's action in the dark. Rather than alter the story's focus, William hired the expertise of veteran director George Spenton-Foster. In keeping with the nature of the subject material, the story experiments with the use of shadow, the earthy sound effects and unexpected camera angles. The incidental music provided by Dudley Simpson is kept to a minimum in the early episodes, then rises to a crescendo as the tension mounts.

In the future, Doctor Who narratives would switch in tone from Victorian horror to parody and pastiche. However, as the swansong for the show's gothic period, Image of the Fendahl also stands as one of its finest examples.
