Synopsis

The time: 1959. The place: the Shangri-La Holiday Camp, South Wales. The Doctor and Mel want time out. The hedonistic alien Navarinos wants to catch some vintage rock and roll. And two CIA agents want to know what happened to their country's missing satellite.

When the beautiful Chimeron princess Delta shows up on the scene, the murderous Bannermen soon follow in hot pursuit. The stage is set for a fiery showdown that will decide the fate of an entire civilisation.

Background

Malcolm Kohll's Delta and the Bannermen was something different. And that's exactly what script editor Andrew Cartmel wanted.

Cartmel had plans to revitalise the show with new writers, new ideas, and a new kind of companion for the Doctor. Ray, played by Sara Griffiths, was a serious contender for the role. Although Ray ended up staying in Wales, the Doctor soon met another practical, independent young woman to share his adventures - Ace, brought to life by Sophie Aldred in the next story, Dragonfire (1987).

Delta and the Bannermen also broke new ground in its blend of light entertainment with darker underlying themes. Beneath the glitzy surface of fifties rock and roll were the first inklings of the more serious tone that would prevade the final two seasons of the classic series. In particular, Sylvester McCoy began to develop the mysterious, alien portrayal of the Doctor that would become his trademark.

The final innovation of the story was its setting. In his travels through time and space, the Doctor had rarely visited Wales. Little did anyone imagine that eighteen years later, the Principality would play a vital role in the triumphant comeback of Doctor Who.

Further information

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
