Synopsis

Earth, 1988: While the Doctor and Ace flee from emotionless men wielding futuristic pistols, neo-Nazi Herr de Floes is intent on heralding the Fourth Reich. Meanwhile, the villainous Lady Peinforte uses black magic to propel herself forward from 1638 for a final confrontation with her sworn enemy - the Doctor. And, at the same time, a spacecraft full of Cybermen sets down on Earth ...

As the Doctor desperately evades multiple enemies, a meteor containing a Gallifreyan super-weapon is hurtling ever nearer to the planet. Whoever controls the Statue will hold the power of life or death over the entire universe ...

Background

Very few television programmes reach the milestone of 25 years, and to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of Doctor Who, what more appropriate adversary to face the Doctor than the dreaded Cybermen? And yet the 25th Anniversary story offers more than just this tie to the past - in many ways it seeks to reaffirm and reinvigorate the programme.

The three factions to whom the Doctor is opposed all embody ideologies that he has consistently fought against. De Flores and his army believe in the fascist mentality of might over rights of others; Lady Peinforte believes in magic, superstition and blackmail; whereas the Cybermen represent the literal dehumanising of others and their emotions. The Doctor realises that these ideologies can never be allowed to hold the power that the Nemesis Statue would provide and reaffirms his essential principle of freedom for all life in his characteristically chaotic manner.

Andrew Cartmel, in his second year as script editor, seized upon this milestone to reinvest some mystery into the character of the Doctor and it is here that we start to learn that we don't necessarily know everything about our hero and his origins.

At the heart of this story is the programme's sense of fun. The Doctor sets about thwarting his enemies with a spring in his step, using jazz music to defeat ruthless logic and all the time whistling as he works. There really is no other hero quite like him, and perhaps no other way quite as appropriate to celebrate this long-lived programme ...

Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
