Synopsis

Two spacecraft fuse in a hyperspace collision. Fortunately the Doctor, Romana and K-9 arrive to help. But when a crewmember is found clawed by a ferocious animal, it seems there's something even more frightening stalking the corridors. The answers lie with zoologist, Professor Tryst, his CET projection machine, and a planet called Eden - the home to the ferocious Mandrels ...

Background

Though Bob Baker and Dave Martin had decided to stop writing together after their series sixteen story, The Armageddon Factor, Baker had continued to develop proposals for Doctor Who. One of these, Nightmare of Eden, had impressed Script Editor, Douglas Adams, with its originality and relevance. As well as the central drug abuse theme, Baker took his influence from disaster movies of the Seventies such as The Poseidon Adventure, Airport and The Towering Inferno.

Unfortunately, the humour and pleasure of the finished story did not extend behind the scenes. The semi-retired Alan Bromly was hired to direct, having previously helmed The Time Warrior. Tom Baker was critical of his uncompromising, old-school methods, having clear ideas about how he should perform. This resulted in a very strained production, finally leading to Bromly quitting and leaving Graham Williams to finish the story. Happily, Williams shows an aptitude for pace, mood and tension, despite the production's growing faults.

However, no one could gloss over the Mandrels. Scripted as swamp beasts dripping with mud, they were another case of the programme's budget limiting the realisation, with critics labelling them "cute rejects from The Muppet Show".

Nightmare of Eden is a witty, mature story slightly undermined by its overplaying into pantomime. Though it has its defects, it displays them unashamedly and remains clever, bold and dramatic, with an unusually serious anti-drug moral. Yet it still manages to marry beautifully with the Adams-style humour of series seventeen. And that's quite a feat.
