With the vital breakthrough in the making of motion pictures - the advent of the talkies - it was obvious, right from the beginning of this new and exciting era that the use of music was going to be a most important adjunct to the speech and action of all kinds of onscreen stories; and of course, there would be endless possibilities for Hollywood to create its own music-based projects (including the remaking of stage musicals in celluloid form). Fascinating then, that the very first of the talkies was the Jolson starrer, The Jazz Singer (even though it contained only sporadic dialogue plus a handful of songs.) Certainly though, soundtrack music, of all kinds, continued to grow in importance and scope through the succeeding years - and with the appearance of the full-length Hollywood musicals, that process was accelerated. For one thing, there was the often lengthy-plus ''background'' music, as supplied by such masters as Steiner, Tiomkin, Korngold, et al. There were, Jolson apart, internationally-renowned musical artists such as Crosby, Astaire, Garland and Merman - and it was inevitably these kind of legendary performers for whom special material continued to be written over many years by the likes of the Gershwins, Kern, Berlin, Porter ..... The importance of the individual song was soon recognised by Hollywood's backroom boys. Only six years after the installation of the Oscar awards (for acting, directing, producing and such) - with effect from 1934 to be exact - it was decided to add a separate category to the annual event; Best Film Song of the year. For the gifted, hard - working songwriters, it was indeed a richly-deserved tribute. The results of the first seventeen years of this particular division of the Academy Awards - seventeen outright winnres, covering the years 1934-1950 - can be heard yet again, within this package. Each number performed with sympathy, and loving care by Tony Baker and his Orchestra. STAN BRITT 'Music Week' 1989. | ||

You will find all the US Pickwick label versions linked at the parent company Pickwick International, Inc. Pickwick Records quickly established itself as the market leader in budget-price LPs thanks to its innovative business practices. It was the first UK company to put in place exclusive licensing deals with the major record companies (for many years it was the official budget reissue outlet for labels such as RCA - since 1973 - and CBS.) |
