Bobby Lamb came bounding over to my table in the canteen of Aeolian Hall, the headquarters of BBC's Radio 2 Network and the stamping ground of many working musicians, artists and radio folk.

''I have something that may suit you for ''Sweet 'n' Swing'', he said. This is a weekly series I was producing at the time, comprisong the BBC's Midland Orchestra and a changing Dance Band. As I had booked Johnny Lambe (sic) and his Birmingham-based band for a programme, it certainly seemed logical to follow with brother Bobby's, so I enquired further and he described a very different sounding instrumental group.

What was interesting about the Keymen is that Bobby uses just 2 front-line instrumentalists: himself pn Trombone and Duncan Lamont on Tenor Sax doubling Flute, while the remaining 8 instruments were variations of tuned Percussion and Rhythm; neverthe less he included in his scores many solo passages for tuned instruments as diverse as Harp and Electric Piano. Finally - and this clinched it - ''Sweet 'n' Swing'' is broadcast in stereo and the Keymen seemed to offer tremendous scope and possibilitiesw in this medium. This L.P. is the product of our work.

The Keymen who arrived at the studio were al top-flight session musicians, as the line up column shows; but a keyman amongst them is Duncan Lamont of whom Bobby Lamb says, ''I feel a complete rapport with his playing so that I think we complement each other. That I enjoy his solos so much is borne out by the number that I have passed to him.''

This album has three non-standard numbers which are by Bobby himself. He explains that Myreed is the Celtic equivalent of Margaret, the name of his Irish wife, while the gentle bossa beguione, Siobhan, is the name of his youngest daughter. He defines Kiskabee as the name of a most wonderful Cork liqueur which was his inspiration rather than that of the bird with the same name ......

Bobby Lamb was born in County Corl, Ireland, and began his musical career at the age of 16, leaving home to play with a travelling circus. His career continued in a widely varied and ascending range of bands and orcestras, such as Jack Parnell's in the early '50s, then later as an accomplished soloist playing with the famous Paul Fenhoulet's BBC Variety Orchestra, later to become the BBC Radio Orchestra. Turning free-lance again, he has performed with every international artist in the popular music field - from Armstrong and Barnet to Sinatra and Tom Jones.

On a more serious musical level, he has won the Ivor Novello outstanding composer award for 1971/2 for his jazz orchestral suite, ''17th March,'' and his 7 Symphonic Preludes, ''The Children of Lir'', has been recorded. Other L.P.'s include ''Jazz Club - Live from Ronnie Scott's'', featuring the Bobby Lamb - Ray Premru Orchestra, (BBC Records REC 116S) and ''Conversations with B.L.K.'' with drummers Buddie Rich, Louis Bellson and Kenny Clare. This is his first L.P. as Composer, Arranger, Musical Director and Trombone soloist.
